Nice desktop!

Wow, LM 12 is faster than LM 10? That's definitely saying something.

yes , lm 12 is defintely a lot faster , exception is boot and shutdown , a bit slower here...

I see. Well, that's cool. I wonder if it has anything to do with using Linux kernel 3.x?

hmm , i'm not an expert on this but i think everybody realized that the 2.6.38 kernel used for the natty release was no improvement , some kind of slow and maybe buggy too . well sometimes the only way to loosen the knot is to cut it.

for me from the user side of view the 3.x kernel has the power to keep a system quite swift in times of extinction of lightweight desktop environments which can't keep up with graphical claims of users...

Yeah, Ubuntu Natty seemed rather sluggish, but Oneiric is quite fast. My Fedora box running kernel 3.1.x also seems reasonably fast, though I fear I've messed around with the boot process a bit too much (booting Fedora is terribly slow; the performance otherwise is good). The only issue I know of with the 3.x kernel is a power regression that has been reported by other users as well; hope they get that fixed soon.

you see lm 12 is based on oneiric using the same kernel , the difference between ubuntu and linux mint was never so big , today ubuntu uses unity and linux mint does not - that's really a fact you can make a decision on ;) so hard days for ubuntu because fedora is coming close , but for me personal i still prefer distributions derivating from the debian branch which for me is the base of ubuntus succes , even when others can almost follow now :D

Yeah, that much I did figure out about Ubuntu and Mint's relationship. Personally, I'm a Fedora user, but I also like Debian-based distros because they're really easy to use.

yep , and that's what canonical did to get a linux system out of the the nerd-corner and make it usable for just everybody . the other big thing which has always been the hardware compatibility i 'think' (again i'm not an expert on this) is slightly better to handle for debian based systems which also is very important to make an os interesting for a larger group of users. i switched to linux some years ago coming from win me , my first install was dapper drake and i liked it from the start and i never used another distro for a longer time since ubuntu and lm are very close to each other...
